The story of the lost palanquin

By Jannatul Bokeya

Do you know that, once upon a time, the palanquin was the most important way to travel? Today, I will tell you the story of that lost palanquin. In my childhood, I used to hear so many palanquin stories from my grandparents.

One day, I asked my Grandmother, “Grandmother, you know so many old stories. Your wedding was such a long time ago! How did your marriage happen in those old days? I want to know all about it.”

At this, Grandmother smiled and said, “All right, dear Grandson, come sit right beside me.” And with that, Grandmother began her tale.

”The day of my wedding was truly unique. Back then, there weren't many cars or carriages. I was carried to my in-laws’ house in a palanquin draped with red and green curtains. Inside, it had a soft cushion, fragrant flower garlands, and curtains drawn all around.”

Then Grandfather chuckled and added, “Back then, it wasn't just for weddings. Even Zamindars and important people would travel by palanquin.”

I asked Grandfather, “Tell me, Grandfather, how exactly did these palanquins work?”

Grandfather explained, “The palanquin was like a wooden sitting cabin. Long, thick bamboo poles were attached to both sides. Four palanquin bearers would lift those poles onto their shoulders. Two would walk in front and two behind to carry it.”

Grandfather then added, “Because of all the modern vehicles, you barely see palanquins anymore.”

I asked Grandmother, “Are you sad that the palanquin no longer exists?”

Grandmother replied, “Yes, I do feel a little sad, of course. But it makes me happy that at least through these stories, you children get to learn about that time.”

Grandfather concluded, “The palanquin was more than just a vehicle; it was a treasure of our culture.”

That is when I understood. The palanquin was not only a mode of transport; it was a symbol of our heritage...which is now lost.
